To the north and east of Vientiane, a broad alluvial plain is formed by sediments or debris laid down by rivers or tributaries that rise in the N highlands.

Alluvial plain is a largely flat landform (or gentle sloping surface) created by the extensive deposition of sediments by rivers and small tributaries coming from highland regions, over a long period of time.
